Menu bar background and visibility of running timer

Coming from a timer program with a dock icon that displayed a red badge when the timer was running, I'm used to being able to see very quickly whether a timer is running. With Timelime, I'm finding myself constantly looking up at the small menu bar status area to check whether a timer is running, which ends up being rather distracting and, since it requires focusing on a small icon, time-consuming.

I think it'd be great to be able to see the timer state more quickly. I'm not sure how much can be done when just the clock icon is displayed, but when Timelime is set to show the task name and/or time in the menu bar, the black background strongly dominates the status area (and the whole menu bar, really) and makes it hard to see and process the color change of the clock icon. I'd suggest making the background black only when a timer is active, which would make the status area less distracting when the timer was off and make it possible to know without even looking up whether the timer was active, since the black background can be seen with just peripheral vision. To me, the black background strongly suggests an On state. (The black background could perhaps even be used when just the clock icon is displayed, for the same reasons.)

(Thanks for creating Timelime. I've looked at many time tracking programs, and Timelime is easily the best I've found.)

Thank you very much for your suggestion and the detailed description!
I totally understand your issue. Other users were suggesting to remove the background of the menu bar item completely to make it blend in more with the rest of the menu bar items.
For an update, I will certainly keep your suggestion in mind and might end up with a couple more appearance settings for the menu bar item. (I know, not very Apple like;-)

(I'm glad about your last sentence:-)
