Hi Randy,
thank you for purchasing Timelime!
Have you checked for a black item in the OS X menu bar that says "No Task"? When you launch the app, this is the only thing you can see.
Is there enough room in the menu bar that the Timelime item can be displayed?
If this didn't help, please delete Timelime.app from the Applications folder and download it again from the App Store.
Please let me know if you were able to resolve the issue.
Thanks,
Niko

How can I change the current total time in case one forgets to press the clock … or wants to time something outside the office.

You can manually add timings by right-clicking on the task and choosing "Add timing" from the contextual menu.
You can do this either from the task list in the panel that pops up from the menu bar or from the task list that is displayed in the app's main window.
